The whole world knew that Taiwan belongs to China. But USA has passed a law to protect Taiwan for the interest of the nation in order to sale weapons to Taiwan to prevent communism from speading over to the whole pacific region from China.
But time has changed since the Deng Xiaoping decided to open China door to the world up to now a days. We can see very clearly that China is no longer a communism state.
Therefore its time for America to consider to carry out a new policy toward China otherwise USA may result in a lost more gain less situation.
Because there are only 10-20% of 23 million Taiwanese people may be happy with USA continue to protect Taiwan and sell arms to Taiwan in order to support their independence dream. Whereas the majority of 1.3billion Chinese people will be unhappy with America unlawful manner.
Furthermore, USA should remember that during the China internal war, America was fully supported to the K.M.T. government. It was given large number of weapons to fight communist party. But ended up with most weapons dropping into the hands of the communist government. This situation may be repeated sooner or later as its a matter of time only. All the hightech weapons provided by USA may be used by the China army when Taiwan has its reunion with mainland China.
The American leaders should think carefully and cleverly what is lost and what is gain for continuing to protect Taiwan and sell weapons to Taiwan.

Liu San,
US cannot and should not decide whether Taiwan should be part of China or not.Rather it is for the Taiwanese to decide whether they choose to "reunite" with the mainland.
KMT had requested for US protection since 1949 and as long as long as the present Taiwanese govt. continues to accept this arrangement US will continue to oblige.
US,being the only democratic superpower, will never unilaterally withdraw its military umbrella from Taiwan.China will continue to press for unification but I doubt that it will do anything foolish to upset the status quo since China has repeatedly announced that peaceful development is its goal and strategic intent.
I think the taiwanese are looking closely and anxiouly at the one-country-two-system poltical arrangement that is being practised in Hong Kong.Economically,Taiwan is pretty much "integrated" with China as this is mutually beneficial.
The chinese have repeatedly said that time is on their side and eventually Taiwan will be theirs again but hopefully without the use of force.

Dear Robert.
I totaly agree with you, but since US have no say on "whether Taiwan should be part of China or not."
and "it is for the Taiwanese to decide whether they choose to reunite with the mainland"
Then why should US continue to protect Taiwan and sell weapons to Taiwan ? therefore American leaders
should clever enough to measure what are the advantage and disadvantage to their country if they are continue to do so.

Over time, I have learned that politics is deeper than what we average citizens can comprehend. There are simply too many interest parties involved on all sides (Taiwan, China, US, Japan). In general, US can never be friend with China as China is posing a real threat to US world economic leadership. Japan is never friend with China either and Japan would not want to see China become a super power. However, between US and Japan, there is no real trust either. Now, Taiwan, the little island, however, with strategic geographical position/locality, becomes the influential chess piece on the game board. It has been used for leveraging and counter-balancing by the super-powers in the past.
Sad to say, with the abundance of intellectual and material resources that people of Taiwan have possessed, they lacked the unity and missed the chance to make a difference for themselves in the world platform. Regardless the scandals and fraudulence the ex-president’s family have committed, there are still a majority of citizens continue to blindly embrace their idol, while no true accountable leader has emerged. The citizens are the ones that will take the consequence of the decisions they make. Buying weapons or not, from which country, defending against whom are all immaterial. No outside party or country can determine their fate for them.
Same goes to the U.S., the election on Nov. 4th puts the future of this country in the hand of her citizens. All propositions, including the presidential, either yeah or nah, the citizens will make their choice and they or their children will take the consequence of the decisions they make today.
